My father loved football.  After his family, it was his greatest love.  To him, it truly was "the beautiful game."

I cannot begin to imagine what he would be thinking now, if he were reading the news stories on the John Terry trial.  He would have been appalled, I think, that the game has sunk so low, and that the sportsmanship he prized so highly is now non-existent as far as these petulant, over-paid, prima donnas of the professional game are concerned.

I'm not sure what I think about the verdict, or the reasons why the case was brought, or the repercussions for those who are working to "Kick Out" racial abuse on the pitch and on the terraces.  I just know that football is the loser in all this - and that my Dad would have wept to see it.

Nine people, including three Britons, were killed in the avalanche in the French alps.  Two of the Britons were climbing to raise money for a cancer charity, while their guide was an experienced climber, renowned and respected in mountaineering circles.  Sometimes it seems, as also in the recent flooding that has devastated so many parts of our country, that just as we get too blase about our ability to control the elements for our own purposes, Mother Nature deals us a blow to bring us up with a start.  RIP those brave men who died doing what they loved and to help others - but paid the ultimate price.
