Our GPs surgery was "Open for Business as Usual" today with none of the doctors at the practice opting to strike.  We went in to say "thank you" - it seemed the right thing to do, somehow.  It will be very interesting to find out, presumably tomorrow, just how many doctors have decided to strike today.

Today I read the transcript of the talk which Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese freedom fighter, gave to Oxford University recently.  A remarkable woman, her speech looked back at how her life as an Oxford student had prepared her for the battles ahead and her long confinement to house arrest because of her principles.  Her thoughts about the freedoms which we enjoy as a matter of course were sobering when considered in the context of the lives of others who don't enjoy the liberty we too often take for granted.  If you'd like to read her speeech yourself you can find it at:

So comedian Jimmy Carr has been taken to task by the Prime Minister, no less, for taking advantage of legal - but highly questionable - methods of tax avoidance.  I was interested in "Jammy" Carr's twitter response - I was expecting him either to laugh it off or launch a full-frontal attack on prying politicians.  Instead he did neither but seems to have admitted that perhaps he had got it wrong.

I don't actually like him as a comedian all that much but I'm pleased he faced up to the criticism in the way he did.  As for me, well, like most of us I've grumbled at the amount of income tax I've had to pay - but I still think it's the fairest form of taxation, with each of us paying according to the amount we earn.  Which makes it even worse to hear of the dodgers who don't play - and pay - fair like the rest of us!
